What's At Stake?
Support the Safe Climate Act!

We must act quickly to avoid the disastrous consequences of unfettered greenhouse gas pollution. Representative Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) recently introduced a bill that does just that. The Safe Climate Act (H.R. 5642) sets targets for freezing greenhouse gas emissions in 2010, then progressively reducing emission levels over the next several decades. Greenhouse gas pollution would fall to 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050 – the reduction that scientists tell us is necessary to avoid the most severe consequences of global warming. To achieve these targets, the bill combines a cap-and-trade program with measures to advance technology and reduce emissions through renewable energy, energy efficiency and cleaner cars.

So far Congress has failed to decisively address climate change. But now – with even President Bush admitting that climate change is "a serious problem" – the time is ripe to build support for real solutions. Please write your representative and ask him or her to cosponsor the Safe Climate Act. And please also share this message with your family and friends!

Plastic, Nature and the Consumer

Plastic is a major polluter to our environment and a death sentence to many species.

40% of baby albatross chicks die every year from eating plastic feed to them by their un-expecting parents. Their bellies are full of bottle caps, toothbrushes and other plastics. While oil remains a large factor in the pollution of our oceans, litter generated by consumers on land is an even larger problem.

California Condors

Tejon is integral to the survival and recovery of the majestic California Condor, the largest flying bird in North America.

Tejon was one of the last best places for California Condors until the population dropped so close to extinction in the mid-1980s that the few remaining wild birds were captured in order to seed a recovery program. A natural park at Tejon would provide important habitat for recovery of the species. Releases of captive-reared condors began in the mid-1990s, and there are currently more than 140 reintroduced condors in the wild, including 67 flying free in California.

Ways to Help Reduce the Effects of Global warming

It's about cutting power use and consumption generally which isn't so simple in a world where consumption is often admired and sometimes envied and where power use can make life more convenient or more interesting.

As a rule of thumb though anything you can do to use less energy and buy locally produced items of quality rather than cheap and cheerful in quantity will help.

There are many guides as to what to do, some very effective, others less so, the most effective are:

Fly less or not at all.

Get a less polluting car and use it less often.

Get more efficient refrigeration - fridges and freezers are on 24/7/365 and as a result use the most energy of any domestic appliance.

Reduce the amount of heating your house or office needs, use insulation, stop droughts, turn the thermostat down 1 degree.

Reduce water heating requirements, takes showers not baths, take normal showers, not power-showers, get a more efficient washing machine.

Get low energy light bulbs and turn them off when not needed.
